Needs assessment done to address safety and crime preventively on farms and in rural areas!

Agricultural associations, area offices and district agricultural unions will do a needs assessment of their areas to address safety and crime preventively. A guideline for this will be sent by Free State Agriculture (FSA) to help them compile it. According to Dr Jane Buys, Safety and Risk Analyst at FSA, this follows after the agreement between FSA and Fidelity ADT, which was started in April 2019, was further discussed.

“All applications for camera systems from the agricultural associations/DAUs must be sent to Fidelity ADT by the FSA’s Safety Committee,” she says. This comes after FSA and Fidelity ADT met again on 29 May 2019.

A first meeting took place on 29 April 2019 between Fidelity ADT, FSA, Agri Northern Cape, the Red Meat Producers’ Organization (RPO) in the Free State and Northern Cape and Agri SA to address issues of greater safety and combating crime on the commercial agricultural sector in the Free State and Northern Cape.

According to Buys, applications for AgriSecuritas must also be forwarded to FSA’s Safety Committee and Fidelity ADT must provide one of the three quotes.

“A task team consisting of two representatives of Fidelity ADT, members of the FSA’s Safety Committee and the RPO has been set up to coordinate all aspects of enhanced cooperation,” she says.

It has also been decided that all 22 farm guards, who are classified as private security under agricultural associations/DAUs and receive payment, first forwards a needs assessment, as well as where there are requests to expand farm guards and possibly link them to Fidelity ADT.

Buys says FSA’s Safety Committee and Fidelity ADT will visit farm guards to talk to them and a detailed audit will be conducted to address needs assessments.

“Individual farmers can then contact Fidelity ADT for such products, alarms, cameras, etc. There are several safety applications or apps made available by Fidelity that can be linked to a phone and alarm.”

FSA’s Safety Committee will also shortly forward a summary of safety products made available by Fidelity ADT for agricultural communities at very affordable prices.

A Fidelity helpline was also established. It is manned 24 hours a day and can be contacted on 083 256 8329 where individual farmers can submit their alarm, camera, etc. requests.

Individual safety product requests can also be made at 011 766 6043 and agrisa@fidelitycc.co.za (email).
